Hi, I'm Justin. If you are reading this, you are probably trying to decide if I am the right fit for you or someone you know. In an effort to help you out, here is a little bit about who I am. I was born and raised in wonderful Fort Collins, Colorado. When I am not counseling clients, I enjoy playing lots of pickup basketball, occasional rounds of disc golf, playing my guitar, and spending time with my amazing wife. I root for my alma mater Rams, the Denver Nuggets, and the Denver Broncos.
The nuance and complexity of people's stories is what drew me to the counseling field. My own journey through therapy has given me a deep gratitude for this process. To me counseling is a very human process--sitting across from another person and sharing in the anguish of the human condition. I have experienced first-hand how transformative it can be to have a therapist listen deeply and help me make sense of my life. I consider my own experiences in therapy an integral part of my training. It's hard to take someone where you haven't gone before.
I know getting started with counseling can feel like such an awkward process. My deepest desire as a therapist is to create a space where you feel truly seen and known; a space where you don't have to have it all together; and a space that feels honoring. I won't strive to fix you (mostly because I can't) but rather I aim to witness the heartache you have incurred and to accompany you on your journey toward discovering wholeness. Therapy is a deeply sacred process, and I am adamant about honoring that. I welcome humor whenever I can, it is a necessary part of this work.
Much like a sculptor shapes their stone, so our experiences chisel our reality. All of the people, places, and events we have witnessed have shaped our every part. The parts we like about ourselves, the parts we dislike, and the parts we try to pretend aren't there. I honor the importance of meeting clients where they are at and taking the time to sit in the mud with them. A lot of therapists will focus on helping clients find "solutions" to their problems. In my eyes the process of healing and change are rarely that simple.
In therapy my goal is to help clients rediscover their own sense of agency over their lives. To do this, one must have a good understanding about themselves. Why they do what they do, feel the way they feel, and think the way they think.
In the wise words of Gabor Maté, "Not the world, not what's outside of us, but what we hold inside traps us." I aim to help people learn to cultivate self-compassion, presence, and curiosity toward their pain (what we hold inside that traps us). This posture toward our pain is always a necessary antecedent for healing and create the conditions for transformation.
-How I do psychotherapy is heavily influenced by Gabor Maté, Bessel van der Kolk, and Daniel J. Siegel.
-Compassionate Inquiry, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Brainspotting embody the heart of my counseling approach.
-Other therapies I utilize include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and mindfulness-based approaches.
-I work with adolescents, young adults, and adults.
